“What do you want from life, Harley?” Liz blurted out the query without meaning to.

“From life?” he echoed.

Glad he couldn’t see the red in her cheeks, she tried to backpedal. “Sorry. That sounded funny. I meant tell me more about your current life.”

“Hmm.” The noise made her sure he wasn’t fooled by her lame attempt at a cover-up.

She bit her lip and cursed the fact that her mind had been quick enough to leap to the question, but not sharp enough to stop it from escaping. And leap was exactly what her brain had done. From the fact that Harley thought being called by his title was sexy to thinking about the sad parts of his life that led him to that role in the first place. And from those thoughts to wondering who he might’ve become if tragedy hadn’t led him to police work. Then to who he might want to be after he got the justice he wanted. And then the final leap. A big one. Straight off the ledge. Was there a chance that he could see himself with her in his life after all was said and done?

She let go of her lip from between her teeth and forced a light tone. “Since I need to keep my mind from going crazy with worry about Teegan, and you won’t let me kill time the way I thought we should.”

“It’s not because I don’t want to,” he assured her.

“I know. Superheroes are all about timing things exactly right.”

“Pretty much.” He slid his palm to the back of her hand and threaded his fingers through hers. “What would you like to know?”

“Anything,” she replied, realizing it was true.

She wanted to hear about Harley’s life and what he wanted from it. Both because she was interested and because she really did need the distraction. And he seemed to be very good at keeping her that way.

“Tell me more about Marmalade the cat,” she urged. “Or your mom. Or what you do when you’re not detecting.”

“I think I pretty much covered everything there is to know about the cat. Sleeps. Pounces. Eats every now and then, which is probably why he’s such a beast. And I’d tell you how great my mom is, but a lot of women think things like that are weird, so...”

She couldn’t muster up a laugh. The thought of a lot of women parading through Harley’s life dug at her a little more than it probably should have. And once again, her mouth wrested control from her brain.

“Are there a lot of women in your life?” she asked.

“Aside from my mom?” he teased. “No.”

“No?” Even to her own ears, the parroting of his reply sounded phony.

He picked up on it, too. “Is that so hard to believe? I’m a computer nerd with a high-stress job. Doesn’t exactly attract groupies.”

She heard the honesty in his statement, but wanted to see it in his eyes, too, so she tipped her face up to look at him. “I think you know perfectly well how charming you are.
